When hormones kick in, for whatever reason, we are often not ourselves. They can have quite an impact too, especially if you are trying to stick to a good diet.
Most of us are not at our best when hormones get out of whack and the diet is often in danger of being dropped at this time. You don’t feel great, so fighting off the urge to grab a few cookies is just a bridge too far. Yet, hormones do change throughout our lifetimes for various reasons, so waiting for that to finish before completing your diet is just not an option.
Just why hormones mess us around so much is down to a few reasons. For one, when their levels change, a side effect is an increase in cortisol. This is a stress response where the body craves more energy to respond. The net result is that a woman will run to the carbs and fat seeking a short cut to this needed energy. When PMS strikes, serotonin drops too and guess what food component is used to make them – good old carbs. With your body screaming give me more carbs, it’s harder than ever to stop yourself from that snack attack.
If you are being driven from within to eat carbs, try to keep to the complex ones as much as possible. You can bring up that serotonin in a natural, more effective way with complex carbs and help to reduce the tendency to pile simpler carbs in. A slice of wholegrain bread or plate of pasta is a better alternative to half a packet of biscuits and you will feel the effect much quicker.
Whilst hormones can strike anytime, anywhere, how you handle them will be the key to your diet success. You will be made more tired, hungry and irritable at times, but fix it with the right cure and change your eating habits. It won’t belong before you show those hormones who’s boss.
