How to keep your cholesterol in check

Despite the bad rap it gets, our bodies actually need some cholesterol. It helps in the production of some hormones and Vitamin D. But as our bodies produce all the cholesterol we need, the foods we eat often contribute to elevated levels of this waxy substance in our blood. High cholesterol levels can cause a build up in the arteries, creating the plaques that cause heart disease.

There are some foods that can actually help in your efforts to keep cholesterol low. They do so by ensuring that you absorb less of them, or at the very least are taking in more of the right type of cholesterol – LDL – which actually helps keep your arteries clear.

  • Oats and barley
  • Fish like salmon and sardines
  • Nuts
  • Olive oil
  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Avocados
  • Lemons
  • Beans and lentils

All delicious, and all helpful in keeping those arteries unclogged. Next time you are thinking of a salad, consider some of these ingredients, they not only make it taste great, they help keep your heart healthy.
